Anyone for strawberries?
Now that Wimbledon’s here with its strawberries and cream, it is the perfect time to include strawberries as one of your five-a-day fruit & veg.
Eight strawberries provide as much vitamin C as and orange. They also contain many antioxidants, which can protect against cancer. And they are a good source of folic acid, which helps prevent birth defects and lowers the level of homocysteine, a substance that leads to blocked arteries. They’re low in calories but if you are watching your weight add low-fat crème-fraiche or natural yoghurt, not cream.
STRAWBERRY TIPS
• Make sure you buy bright red ones, as they won’t ripen once picked. • Keep them in the fridge and use them quickly or they’ll begin to lose nutrients. • Don’t wash them until just before you use them as this removes their protective coating
