Get fruity on your patio
19/Aug/2004
Get fruity on your patio A brief look at what it takes to grow your own strawberries, including time scales and fertilisers needed.

Get fruity on your patio

They're the wonder fruit that everyone's talking about. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins, strawberries are the healthiest fruit you can eat. So grow your own - they're berry berry easy.

Buy some young pot grown plants from garden centres and pot them up individually in 6in containers or pop 10 plants in a growing bad. Put them in a sunny spot, water them in and give them the occasional watering through the winter. Next spring, as they really get going they'll need watering every few days, and for bumper crops, feed them once a week with a general fertiliser like Chempak No 3. Once they begin flowering, change the weekly feed to a high potash fertiliser. You'll be harvesting in no time.
