Apple Celebrations!
Shoppers are being urged to buy local apples throughout October - guaranteed from the Garden of England wherever you see the green Produced in Kent label. Kentish apples are being sold in special 'Produced in Kent' packs by every Asda store in Kent, London and the south east. Sixty-eight per cent of the UK's apples are grown in Kent, and Kent County Council is mounting the promotion - moving more than six million apples - to coincide with a bumper harvest of our favourite Autumn fruit.
Alex King (KCC's Cabinet Member for Regeneration) said: "The County Council is making it clear these are local apples for local people. I hope residents will support this by only buying apples where they see the Produced in Kent label. This is a first for Kent apples to be promoted in this way across the south east."
Farmers' markets, village shops and libraries will be stocking local apple varieties, and apple festivals and open days across Kent where you can sample apples, apple juices and ciders direct from the grower. Look for local events here, or find Kentish apple growers here.
The apple promotion follows a similar successful campaign to market Kentish strawberries throughout the summer. Several hundred tons of the fruit were sold in supermarkets, farm shops and farmers markets through a Produced in Kent co-operative with a local grower.
