| Spicing up traditional perceptions |
| 06/Dec/2004 |
 |
The hugely successful locals scheme means that more and more of the British public can enjoy the taste of summer. |
Spicing up traditional perceptions
During 2004 even more ASDA customers were able to enjoy "local" strawberries when AMS rolled out the scheme to yet another region: the Midlands. Over the summer a selection of stores in the Midlands enjoyed the taste of strawberries produced in the vale of Evesham. In fact these particular berries have a bit more in common with the Midlands, as all the harvest staff travel from Birmingham daily. Maken Singh Padda owns the farm; the son of a farmer from the Punjab, he moved to the UK in the 1960's and worked in factories throughout the Black Country. He supplies labour from Birmingham to packhouse all over the vale of Evesham as well as to his son Ca's seven year old strawberry farm. They now have about 40 acres of production and are looking forward to increasing their harvest and supplying even more stores in 2005.
