Start the New Year with a Naturally Sweet Treat
The festive period is over and everyone is feeling guilty about their over-indulgence on mince pies and savoury nibbles. So as New Years resolutions are made to get healthy and shed that excess, its time to incorporate fresh berries onto your menu.
Naturally detoxifying, nutritious and very low in calories, berries are of immense benefit for both short-term and long-term health and wellbeing. Most people associate berries with Vitamin C, making them an ideal snack in the winter months to help stave off colds and keep the immune system running at 100%. However, they also provide a high level of Vitamin D and E as well as Antioxidants and Folic Acid which all play a vital part in staying healthy and maintaining a healthy body both on the outside and on the inside. These fruits also contain plant compounds called anthocyanins, which may help to improve vision and circulation, prevent cancer and slow the effects of ageing

Throughout January and into mid February, strawberries are imported from Israel, Egypt and Jordan in the Middle East. The majority raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are all imported from South America throughout January, moving to Spain by mid-February.
Berries are tasty and fabulous served whole, without adding anything (and at their most nutritious), but for that little bit of extra pizzazz try serving simply with fresh natural yoghurt and nuts or take your favourite selection of berries and whiz them up into a fresh berry smoothes. If you feel that it’s still too cold to be having berries with yoghurt then why not try a handful sprinkled on top of warm porridge for a nutritious breakfast. |
