After the frosts
Well Pict European Espana believes the forthcoming season will be good. Last season’s frost which was the first in forty years, meant that many plants died and growers lost an important percentage of their crop, especially raspberries are they are more susceptible to cold weather. Subsequently, it became more difficult to maintain a continuous high level quantity.
Nevertheless, Well Pict European Espana has a very successful season as demonstrated in the record volume of Cat 1 fruit sent to the UK. Edward Grieve (WPE Espana) said, “it is because of the very close relationship we have established with our growers who are keen to grow for us. This season we have contacted additional new growers to keep up with demand. All of our growers are quality conscious and realise that we expect only the highest quality of fruit. Around 80% of this year’s crop will be Sabrosa which will be extremely beneficial as the UK prefers this good eating berry.” Other varieties (Honor & Festival) are also important to the business. There are approximately 32 Wellpict Inc. varieties being trialled, WPE Espana have access to these and will be monitoring them closely.
