Quality - WPE stepping up to the mark
Overall the soft fruit season gave us higher than expected yields and sales were up year on year, on strawberries by 40%, raspberries by 60% and blackberries by 55%. When quality can often be sacrificed for yield, what did WPE do about it?
Our growers stepped up to the mark as our primary customer tighetened their specifications even more this year. Our technical department reports that overall we have received better quality than in previous years. The groups growers have all worked to a nil tolerance of major defects, this has proven successful; rejections have reduced 3.5% on last year.
The 2005 UK season started a couple of weeks later then last year for Well Pict European with excellent quality unlike some of the other English product that was seen on retailers shelves in April.
The everbearer varieties performed better this year due to good weather conditions, a combination of high temperatures and very little rain throughout the summer. In general both appearance and flavour were good.
